“For The Boys One day the U.S. Congress may change allegiance and support al-Qaeda instead of the sons and daughters of their own constituents… 
 
They will denounce the terrorist leadership as incompetent.  Condemn the insurgency for atrocities befitting Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot.  Seek ways of cutting off funds for the failed jihad and prevent terrorist networks from eavesdropping on suspected American agents.  And mock the rank and file as dupes who wasted their lives for a Paradise that doesn’t exist.
 
Not only would it undermine Islamic terrorists everywhere, it would free our troops from bearing the burden of such supporters.
 
That is one theory.
 
The other theory is no one would notice.”

– Democrats have forgotten 9/11 and Republicans haven’t.

– Republicans take fighting terrorism seriously and Democrats don’t.

– Republicans believe we’re in a war on terrorism and Democrats don’t.

It sad, it’s shameful, but defending America from foreign threats is every bit a political issue as abortion or gun control and — yes, there is one Party that believes in stopping terrorism and one Party that doesn’t.”

The “nonbinding resolution” telling the world that we intend to surrender to terrorism and abandon Iraq may be the most disgraceful congressional action since the Democratic Party united to defend slavery.

The vote was a huge morale booster for al Qaeda, for Iraq’s Sunni insurgents, and for the worst of the Shia militias.

The message Congress just sent to them all was, “Hold on, we’ll stop the surge, we’re going to leave – and you can slaughter the innocent with our blessing.”

We’ve reached a low point in the history of our government when a substantial number of legislators would welcome an American defeat in Iraq for domestic political advantage.

The Liberal Dream: Public Education

Back in the old days, say about the time that Tocqueville was marveling at Americans and their voluntary associations, Americans educated their children in what we would now call diverse ways.  There were public schools.  There were charity schools.  There were city academies.  Schooling was a complete mish-mash, but Americans were about 90 percent literate, and parents could educate their children at the school of their choice.  Then along came Horace Mann with a better idea.  He persuaded the people of Massachusetts to centralize and rationalize their schools into a state-run system.
